This unfortunately isn't a surprise. I've been posting everywhere telling people how poorly Comcast treats it's customers and encouraging competition. I believe competition will reduce this sort of arrogance and will force the company to re-evaluate it's unfair business practices.

Hopefully I'll get lucky and DSL or Utopianet will come to my area. I"m also speaking with my City Council to make them aware of what Comcast is doing. I would encourage everyone to press their City Council's to look at this and push for diversity in broadband. This would seriously push Comcast to abandon their poor policies and force them to treat people better.

I'm posting over the next few weeks additional links and stories I've found which may be of interest. It's time for a change.

Binil, thanks for submitting it to Reddit, I am getting some hits from there (not a mighty lot, but every little thing counts). I have sent the story to the consumerist also. Maybe they will post it too, even though the problems I faced are not very big.

Opening the apartment for the service guy and staying with them through out the whole job are two different things. The connection set up could take anything between 5 minutes to 1 hour depending on a lot of things. The apartment manager has her own job to do which is sit in her office and attend to people coming to inquire about vacant apartments as well as attend to issues of the tenants. She wont be able to close her office (her assistant was out for an appointment and she was alone) and stay with the technician if the setup takes too long.
I firmly believe that comcast should have told me that a person should be present throughtout the job and not just for opening the apartment. It was their fault that they didnt tell it to me. So they should have made it up to me by calling back their technician and fixing the job that day itself. That is what is called caring for the customer. To err is human, but to fix it is goodwill.
I am jumping ships as soon as I have an alternative.

May be this is a mis-communication . I read thru ... and u said "I asked them whether it is sufficient if I leave my key with the apartment folks and they can open the apartment for the service guy when he comes to set up the connection".
The assumption here is that the apartment folks will open the apartment for them and be with them when the work is being done . Instead they gave the keys to him asking him to do the task , which is against their policy . Unless they have a written agreement from you they cannot enter the apartment , thats the policy . If you later claim that u lost something from the apartment when they were around , then they will be in trouble. I guess they followed the rulss , and though its frustrating , I guess its best to move forward taking it as one of the lessons learned . The question abt why dint they say it ahead of time .... Hmmm ... they dont usually do that unless u ask for . Providers wouldnt educate their clients , instead they would want their clients to do their homework and ensure that they dont fall off the rules and regulations . That being said , I dont adore Comcast and they are not in my favorite list , I had my own issues with them .

PC, I have submitted this post to Reddit. IMHO, the best way the customer has to hit back is by spreading the word resulting in two possibilities:
1) Comcast higherups might get the idea and take steps to improve the service
2) Other ISPs notice that there really is a demand for their service

Try submitting the story to Digg etc too.
